If that switch is defective the starter will crank now including when in drive or reverse so be careful. The switch must be sealed completely and properly. Twist the two bare ends of copper wire tightly together and wrapped with electrical tape until no copper is exposed. The safety switch is located on the machine for a purpose. Grasp the wire harness and press down on the side tabs with your thumbs then pull them apart to unplug it. After repair always return all safety switches to full functionality before using your riding lawnmower again. Turn on the power of the mower. Now take your position in the mower seat and place the key in the ignition switch.
